Former Nigerian senator Ehigie Uzamere has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the need for a new platform to serve his constituents more effectively. In a resignation letter dated 7 October 2025, addressed to the chairman of Ward 12 in Ovia North‑East Local Government Area, Uzamere explained that his decision was driven by conviction and a commitment to his people, not by animosity.
Uzamere, who represented the Edo South senatorial district, was first elected on the PDP ticket in 2007 and was re‑elected in 2011 under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). He stressed that politics should be a means of serving and representing the populace, and that the evolving Nigerian political landscape requires him to join a platform that aligns with his vision. An ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Uzamere expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received while a PDP member.
Recently, Uzamere was seen at the inauguration meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggesting a possible next step in his political career. As a seasoned politician, his departure may affect the PDP’s structure and influence in the region. The PDP, long a dominant force in Nigerian politics, could see its ability to mobilize support in upcoming elections weakened by the loss of a former senator.
Uzamere’s move reflects the fluid dynamics of Nigerian politics, where party switching is common as politicians pursue their goals. His emphasis on conviction and dedication to effective representation underscores the importance of responsive governance. As the country’s political landscape continues to evolve, his resignation may be viewed as a significant development in the quest for better governance and representation.
