Nigeria’s ACF Urges Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Elections

Tinubu: Arewa's ACF are Atiku's people, aggrieved APC members - Hassan

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a socio-cultural organization in Nigeria, has reiterated its commitment to political neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections. At a meeting in Kaduna, the chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bashir Dalhatu, emphasized that while members are free to belong to any political party, the organization itself will not endorse any particular party.

Dalhatu explained that the ACF’s focus is on promoting good governance, democracy, and the unity of Nigeria. He noted that the organization typically outlines the expected qualities of individuals seeking public office, rather than supporting specific parties or candidates. As a regional organization, the ACF aims to promote the interests of the Northern States, while also contributing to the overall development of Nigeria.

The chairman also addressed the proliferation of non-governmental groups and associations in the Northern States, which he described as “unhealthy.” He emphasized the importance of unity and speaking with one voice on issues affecting the region. Dalhatu recalled that the ACF was established in 2000 by Northern leaders, including former presidents, governors, and traditional rulers, with the goal of promoting unity and harmony among Northerners.

To achieve this goal, several civil society groups were persuaded to dissolve and merge with the ACF. Dalhatu urged those considering creating parallel or splinter groups to reconsider and join the ACF, emphasizing that there is room for all Northerners within the organization. This call for unity is significant, as the ACF seeks to maintain its relevance and influence in the region.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, the ACF’s commitment to neutrality and unity is likely to be closely watched. The organization’s ability to promote good governance and democracy will depend on its ability to balance the interests of its members with the need to maintain a neutral stance. With its long history and regional significance, the ACF is well-positioned to play a key role in shaping the political landscape of Northern Nigeria.
