Bauchi: PDP clinches Shira council seat as APC boycotts by-election

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Nigeria Police Force to remain neutral as the 2026 governorship election approaches. In a statement released on Monday in Osogbo, the party’s State Chairman, Sunday Bisi, praised the Inspector‑General of Police and the State Commissioner of Police for their professionalism, but voiced concern over a recent pattern of arrests and detentions of PDP members that he believes may signal collusion between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and certain police officers.

According to the PDP, petitions filed by APC members are being processed with urgency, while similar complaints from the PDP receive little attention. The party alleges that police are acting as complainants on behalf of APC petitioners rather than serving as impartial investigators in disputes between the two parties. In some instances, the police have initiated court action against detained PDP members without convening both parties to resolve the issue.

The PDP further noted that many of these operations appear to originate from the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, with attempts to transfer arrested PDP members to the Federal Capital Territory. Over the past two weeks, the party cited more than four such incidents and urged police authorities to address the matter before it escalates.

While reaffirming confidence in the neutrality and professionalism of the Inspector‑General and the State Commissioner, the PDP attributes the troubling trend to possible actions by junior officers. The party emphasizes that the police must act as an impartial arbiter, conducting neutral investigations rather than shielding APC petitioners or assuming their position.

The appeal seeks to preserve a positive working relationship between the police and political stakeholders in Osun State. With the 2026 governorship election looming, the PDP stresses the importance of correcting this negative trend to ensure fairness, equity, and peace throughout the electoral process.
