The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparering for its national convention, scheduled to take place from November 15 to November 16. According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, Nigerians are eager to see the PDP put its house in order. Ologunagba stated that the interest shown by Nigerians in the party’s convention demonstrates their love and belief in the PDP.
The forthcoming national elective convention is crucial to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria, and this explains the enthusiasm and interest that Nigerians have in the party. The PDP had previously governed the country for 16 years, a period that many Nigerians consider to be a glorious era in development and hope. During this time, the party paid off debts, achieved double-digit GDP growth, contained inflation, and invested in human capital development.
Under the PDP’s rule, Nigeria’s economy became the largest in Africa, with a value of over $600 billion by 2015. The country was also a top destination for foreign capital investment. Ologunagba noted that party members are already working together to make the convention a success, with 15 broad-based sub-committees established to ensure inclusivity.
Regarding speculations that one of the PDP governors may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ologunagba stated that the PDP is more than an individual and that such a move would not affect the convention. He also confirmed that the PDP had concluded its congress in Edo state, which was held on September 27 by a properly constituted committee. An appeal panel was also set up to address any concerns from the congress.
The PDP’s national convention is expected to be a significant event, with many Nigerians watching to see how the party will move forward. The convention’s outcome will likely have implications for the country’s political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to future elections. As the party prepares for the convention, it remains to be seen how the PDP will address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
