The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant agencies to verify the academic and professional certificates of all political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement titled ‘Certificate Integrity and the Future of Nigerian Leadership’, Obi emphasized the importance of truth and transparency in leadership selection, noting that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends on these values.
Obi commended the recent resignation of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, who stepped down due to discrepancies in his academic records. He also recalled the resignation of former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, who faced similar circumstances during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. These instances, according to Obi, highlight the seriousness of such issues, which constitute criminal offences.
The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that INEC carries out little to no due diligence in confirming certificates submitted by candidates, which can lead to discrepancies, false declarations, and forged credentials. He stressed that only through truth, transparency, and accountability can public service be anchored on honour rather than deceit. Obi suggested that Ghana’s thorough verification process for candidates’ educational claims could serve as a model for Nigeria.
Obi called on INEC to begin immediate verification of certificates submitted by all candidates, from the president to local government councillors, to ensure integrity in the 2027 elections. He also advocated for a comprehensive national review of the qualification and background verification process for all public office holders. Furthermore, he urged INEC to investigate past complaints about forgery and false claims, and to require all incumbent and aspiring candidates to submit their academic certificates for verification and public accessibility.
The verification of certificates is a crucial step in ensuring the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process. With the 2027 general elections approaching, INEC’s prompt action on this matter could help to strengthen the country’s democracy and promote transparency in leadership selection. By prioritizing the verification of certificates, Nigeria can take a significant step towards preventing electoral irregularities and promoting accountability among public office holders.
