Museveni Leads 2026 Uganda Presidential Race

President Museveni has expressed confidence in his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election, stating that he is the best suited for the job among the eight contenders. During a media interaction with journalists from the Lango sub-region, Museveni attributed Uganda’s economic recovery and progress to the efforts of the National Resistance Movement (NRM). He emphasized that the NRM’s ideology and historical contribution have been instrumental in bringing peace and stability to the country, which had been plagued by conflict for over 500 years.

Museveni highlighted the significant development achievements of his government, including the growth of the economy from $3.9 billion in 1986 to $66 billion currently. He also mentioned the expansion of infrastructure, such as roads and electricity, as well as the establishment of health centers. The president further emphasized the importance of poverty alleviation programs, citing initiatives like Entandikwa, Bonna Bagaggawale, Operation Wealth Creation, and NAADs, which were introduced to promote prosperity for all Ugandans.

The president’s comments come as the country prepares for the 2026 presidential election, with several candidates vying for the top position. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, representing the National Unity Platform, Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change, Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation, and Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party are among the notable contenders. Museveni’s message emphasized the need for stability and wealth creation, urging all Ugandans to participate in the process rather than being spectators.

Museveni’s government has been in power for nearly four decades, and his candidacy is seen as a bid to extend his rule. The president’s confidence in his party’s ability to ensure stability and prosperity is likely to be a key aspect of his campaign. As the election approaches, Ugandans will be weighing their options and considering the track record of the various candidates. The outcome of the election will have significant implications for the country’s future, and the international community will be watching closely.
