Queen tops UK rock airplay list this century

Queen Tops List of Most Played Rock Acts in the UK this Century

According to a recent report by the Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), a music licensing company, British rock group Queen has been named the most played rock act in the UK since the year 2000. The band has accumulated an impressive 400 million seconds of airplay on TV and radio, equivalent to 12 and a half years. This milestone underscores the enduring popularity of Queen’s music, with their iconic track “A Kind of Magic” being the most played song from the group.

Queen’s guitarist, Brian May, expressed his astonishment at the feat, noting that most of the band’s major works were created in the 20th century, making it remarkable to top a 21st-century list. The band’s success can be attributed to their string of number one hits in the 1980s and 1990s, which continue to resonate with audiences today.

The PPL list, released ahead of National Album Day on October 18, also features other notable rock acts, including David Bowie, who came in at number two. Bowie’s collaboration with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury on the chart-topping “Under Pressure” in 1981 remains a standout moment in music history. Irish rockers U2 took the third spot, followed by Oasis, Fleetwood Mac, and the Rolling Stones, all of whom made the top 10.

The PPL report highlights the significant impact of these rock acts on the music industry, with their music continuing to be widely played and enjoyed by audiences across the UK. The list serves as a testament to the timelessness of their music and the enduring influence they have had on the rock genre. As the music industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these legacy acts continue to shape the sound of rock music in the years to come. With National Album Day approaching, fans and music enthusiasts alike will have the opportunity to celebrate the contributions of these iconic rock acts and explore their legendary discographies.
