ADC Gives New INEC Chairman Benefit of Doubt

The African Democratic Congress has expressed its cautious optimism regarding the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party stated that it will give Professor Amupitan the benefit of the doubt in leading the electoral body.

The nomination of Professor Amupitan was approved by the National Council of State on Thursday. As a professor of law, the African Democratic Congress expects him to restore the confidence of Nigerians and the international community in the country’s electoral process. The party emphasized that Professor Amupitan’s loyalty should be to the Nigerian people, rather than the government that appointed him.

According to the statement, Professor Amupitan has the opportunity to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy, or risk damaging his reputation. The party noted that his tenure will likely span beyond one electoral cycle, and therefore, he should prioritize the interests of the Nigerian people over those who appointed him.

The nomination of Professor Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s electoral process. The country has faced challenges in recent elections, and the international community has been closely watching the developments. As the new Chairman of INEC, Professor Amupitan will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s electoral landscape and restoring confidence in the process.

The African Democratic Congress’s statement highlights the importance of impartiality and transparency in the electoral process. As Professor Amupitan assumes his new role, he will be expected to demonstrate his commitment to these principles and work towards conducting free and fair elections. The outcome of his tenure will be closely watched by Nigerians and the international community, and it remains to be seen how he will navigate the challenges ahead.
