Democracy turns to dictatorship in advanced nations

A former Nigerian lawmaker has expressed concerns that advanced democracies are slowly embracing dictatorial tendencies. Shehu Sani, a human rights activist and ex-senator from Kaduna Central, made this statement on his social media platform, highlighting the threats and job losses faced by individuals who exercise their freedom of speech online.

According to Sani, the system is intimidating and silencing members of the legislature, while freedom appears to be in decline. He noted that actions typically associated with dictatorships are now being observed in advanced democracies. These include punishing universities for allowing protests, disrespecting judges, and targeting political opponents with fabricated charges.

Sani also mentioned the consideration of constitutional amendments to extend presidential tenure, the deployment of troops without due process, and the harassment of the media. These developments have raised concerns about the erosion of democratic values and the potential for authoritarianism.

The situation highlighted by Sani is not unique to Nigeria, as similar trends have been observed in other countries. The intersection of social media, politics, and freedom of speech has become a contentious issue globally. As the world grapples with the challenges of balancing security, stability, and individual liberties, the concerns raised by Sani underscore the need for vigilance in protecting democratic principles.

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about the health of democracies worldwide. The rise of populist movements, the increasing polarization of societies, and the exploitation of social media for political gain have all contributed to the uncertainty surrounding the future of democracy. As international observers and human rights organizations continue to monitor the situation, it remains to be seen how advanced democracies will respond to these challenges and ensure the preservation of their core values.
