The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, said the party remains strong and is poised to reclaim power in 2027. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, he acknowledged recent defections of some governors and lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but stressed that the PDP is working to stabilise its ranks, rebuild public trust and maintain unity.
Mohammed attributed the defections to coercive tactics by the APC‑led federal government, which he claimed aims to weaken the opposition and push Nigeria toward a one‑party system. He emphasized that the PDP still enjoys massive grassroots support, which will be crucial for its resurgence, and affirmed his personal commitment to the party, noting that Bauchi State is free of division.
While recognising the possibility of further defections, Mohammed insisted that the party’s structure remains intact and highlighted the PDP’s credentials as a credible platform capable of rebuilding the nation. He pointed out that most of the federal government’s major achievements were recorded under PDP administrations and expressed optimism that the party will deliver positive change in 2027 by producing capable leaders.
Regarding the upcoming PDP convention, Mohammed said the leadership is addressing internal disputes and court cases that threaten to destabilise preparations. He dismissed speculation about potential defections by governors such as Enugu’s Peter Mbah and Rivers’ Siminalayi Fubara, adding that the PDP remains open to welcoming prominent figures who wish to join the party.
When asked about rumours linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to a 2027 presidential project, Mohammed affirmed that the party is united and will present leadership that offers the best choice for Nigerians. In summary, the PDP is focused on strengthening its ranks and rebuilding public trust amid recent defections, with a clear goal of reclaiming power in 2027. Mohammed’s optimism about emerging visionary leaders underscores the party’s intent to challenge the APC’s politics and shape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
