President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant for Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, has downplayed speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s possible return to politics. In an interview in Kano, Abdulaziz noted that Jonathan’s defeat while serving as a sitting president indicates he does not pose a significant political threat. “Somebody who was defeated while he was a sitting President, there is nothing he can do now. Maybe he can come and try his luck. It is the beauty of democracy. Anybody can decide to contest,” he said, emphasizing that Jonathan’s loss suggests he is unlikely to succeed in a future election.
Abdulaziz stressed that Jonathan’s potential comeback does not concern President Tinubu or his administration. He warned that Jonathan might be misled by individuals urging him to re‑enter the political arena, saying, “I am sure that some people will want to mislead him.” He advised caution, adding that a future election bid is unlikely to be successful: “I don’t see where Jonathan will make an in‑road or get any substantial vote in that election.”
The speculation about Jonathan’s return comes amid ongoing discussions about Nigeria’s political landscape, where former leaders often retain significant influence. While Abdulaziz downplayed any threat from Jonathan, the former president’s possible comeback will likely be closely monitored by political observers and analysts. As the country’s political environment continues to evolve, the prospect of former leaders like Jonathan re‑emerging remains a topic of discussion, though, for now, Abdulaziz’s comments suggest that President Tinubu’s administration is not worried about it.
