Lagos Green Line rail project delayed until December 2025

The Lagos State Government has announced a revised commencement date for the $3 billion Green Line rail project, shifting the construction start to December 2025. Initially, the project was slated to begin before the end of 2025, as announced by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in April.

The 70-kilometer Green Line rail project aims to connect Marina to the Lekki corridor, featuring 17 stations along a mix of elevated and at-grade tracks. The rail line will run from Marina, passing through Victoria Island, and continue through Ajah, Sangotedo, and the Lekki Free Trade Zone. Upon completion, the project is expected to take two to three years, with implementation phased to ensure efficient progress.

The first phase of the project will cover the stretch from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase, starting from Marina, will include an on-water segment. Commissioner Osiyemi noted that extensive feasibility studies and stakeholder consultations have been conducted along the Lekki-Epe corridor in preparation for the project. The government has engaged with stakeholders and conducted thorough feasibility studies to ensure the project’s success.

The Green Line project is a significant infrastructure development for Lagos State, aiming to enhance transportation and connectivity in the region. With the revised commencement date set for December 2025, the project is expected to bring notable improvements to the area’s transportation network. The Lagos State Government’s investment in the rail project underscores its commitment to developing the state’s infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its residents. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its development and assess its impact on the region’s transportation landscape.
