The Lagos State Government has announced a revised commencement date for the $3 billion Green Line rail project, moving the start of construction to December 2025. The project, originally slated to begin before the end of 2025, was first announced by Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi in April.

The 70‑kilometre Green Line will connect Marina to the Lekki corridor, featuring 17 stations on a combination of elevated and at‑grade tracks. The line will run from Marina, pass through Victoria Island, and continue through Ajah, Sangotedo, and the Lekki Free Trade Zone. Upon completion, the project is expected to take two to three years, with implementation phased to ensure efficient progress.

The first phase will cover the stretch from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase will start from Marina and include an on‑water segment. Commissioner Osiyemi noted that extensive feasibility studies and stakeholder consultations have been conducted along the Lekki‑Epe corridor in preparation for the project. The government’s engagement with stakeholders and thorough feasibility work aim to ensure the project’s success.

The Green Line is a significant infrastructure development for Lagos State, intended to enhance transportation and connectivity in the region. With the revised start date set for December 2025, the project is expected to bring notable improvements to the area’s transportation network. This investment underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to developing infrastructure and improving residents’ quality of life, and its progress will need to be closely monitored to assess its impact on the region’s transportation landscape.
