Dr. Alex Chukwuemeka Obiechina, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Enugu State, praised Governor Peter Mbah’s decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC, saying it reflects the governor’s concern for the future. Obiechina noted that Mbah’s second term was already secured, even without joining the ruling national party. Elected on the PDP platform in 2023, Governor Mbah is scheduled to be formally received into the APC on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Obiechina lauded the governor’s courage and foresight, emphasizing the “excellence and zeal” he has brought to governance in Enugu State. He also criticized the PDP, accusing it of fostering stagnation over the past 26 years due to alleged impunity, indiscipline, and resistance to change. As the PDP’s governorship candidate in Enugu in 2011, Obiechina recounted his own experience with the party’s purported impunity, which he claimed denied him his candidacy. He expressed relief at Mbah’s departure, citing the PDP’s corruption, bad politics, and indiscipline.
Obiechina further argued that the PDP has denied the South‑East region opportunities, including the chance to fly the party’s presidential flag in the elections of 1999, 2003, and 2023. In a related development, several of Governor Mbah’s cabinet members—Dr. Lawrence Ezeh, Dr. Amaka S. Ngene, and Dr. Felix Nnamani—have publicly declared their support for the APC, waving the party’s flag at Enugu State Government House. A viral video captured them saying, “We are in the APC now, Jagaban all the way, APC from bottom to top.”
The governor’s and his cabinet’s shift to the APC is being viewed as a significant development in Enugu State politics. With Mbah’s second term already assured, his move to the APC is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape. The official reception of Governor Mbah into the APC on Tuesday is anticipated to be a major event, marking a new chapter in the state’s political history.
