Sunday Udeh‑Okoye, a former National Youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), predicts a decisive victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State in the 2027 general election. His forecast follows a wave of defections from the PDP to the APC, including his own recent switch to the ruling party. Udeh‑Okoye attributes the expected win to the APC’s strengthened structure in Enugu, which he says will produce a landslide regardless of the candidates fielded by other parties.
When asked about the potential impact of Peter Obi’s candidacy, Udeh‑Okoye remained confident that the APC will prevail, citing the party’s bolstered organization in the state. He noted that in the 2023 presidential election, Obi, running on the Labour Party platform, won Enugu largely because the APC lacked a solid structure at the time. Since then, key figures—including Udeh‑Okoye himself—have joined the APC, significantly enhancing its presence.
Udeh‑Okoye also addressed the perception that residents of the Southeast are reluctant to support the APC. He argued that this aversion stems from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged attitude toward the region. With Governor Mbah’s recent defection to the APC, three of the five southeastern states are now under the party’s control. He suggested that the APC’s growth in the region reflects the efforts of local leaders, such as Governor Mbah, who have fulfilled campaign promises, and that the Ndigbo people may now be more open to backing the APC.
As the 2027 general election approaches, the expanding APC presence in Enugu State is likely to become a significant factor shaping the political landscape of the region.
