Veteran comedian and actor Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba, recently shared his views on polygamy, emphasizing its potential practical and cultural benefits. In an interview with media personality Nedu, he argued that having multiple wives can promote stability in relationships by encouraging cooperation and reducing tension among spouses. According to Alibaba, the presence of several wives can lead to calmer, more composed behavior, as each spouse is aware that alternative partners are available.
He cited traditional practices in parts of Nigeria where some women encouraged their husbands to take additional wives to prevent infidelity and maintain harmony at home. In certain cases, women would even arrange marriages for young girls and present them to their husbands to deter the pursuit of concubines. Alibaba also noted that polygamy can arise out of necessity rather than choice. For example, when a man dies leaving a young widow and children, the family may ask one of his brothers to care for the widow, resulting in a polygamous relationship. He explained that this is how polygamy evolved in some cultures.
While acknowledging the controversy surrounding the practice, Alibaba emphasized that polygamy holds value in specific social and cultural contexts. He pointed out that many critics of polygamy may themselves have children with multiple partners, highlighting the complexity of the issue. His comments provide insight into the cultural and historical background of polygamy in Nigeria, where it remains both practiced and debated. Alibaba’s perspectives underscore the need for a nuanced understanding that considers the diverse social, cultural, and economic factors influencing relationships and family structures, contributing to a more informed discussion about the practice and its implications.
