Former National Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sunday Udeh‑Okoye, predicted that another Southeast state will soon fall under the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program, shortly after his own defection to the APC along with other Enugu State leaders, including Governor Peter Mbah. The defections were attributed to leadership and management failures within the PDP rather than an effort to crush the opposition.
The APC’s expanding influence in the South‑East is viewed as a significant development. The party already governs Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu states, while Anambra remains under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Abia is led by the Labour Party. When asked which state he believed would next join the APC, Udeh‑Okoye declined to comment, citing classified information, but he stressed that the party’s growth in the region was unstoppable.
These recent defections have major implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, especially in the Southeast geopolitical zone, which comprises Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. Governor Mbah’s move to the APC was facilitated by high‑ranking party officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda. As the APC continues to broaden its presence in the South‑East, observers will watch closely to see which state will be the next to come under its control. Udeh‑Okoye’s prediction has sparked considerable interest and speculation among political analysts, who anticipate that the party’s growing influence will have significant repercussions for the country’s overall political dynamics in the coming months.
