Founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Boniface Aniebonam, has stated that politicians joining the All Progressives Congress are doing so voluntarily, rather than being coerced by President Bola Tinubu. Aniebonam emphasized that membership in any Nigerian political party is voluntary, and there have been no instances of politicians being forced to defect at gunpoint.
The recent surge in defections by governors and elected members of various parties to the APC has sparked allegations that President Tinubu is attempting to establish a one-party system in Nigeria. However, Aniebonam dismissed these claims, pointing out that the country has 18 registered political parties, which is a fundamental aspect of its multi-party system.
According to Aniebonam, President Tinubu has stated that he will not prevent anyone from joining the APC, as it is their right to do so. The President and the APC have the right to seek new members and campaign for reelection. Aniebonam noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission has not deregistered any existing political parties, making the notion of a one-party state unfounded.
Aniebonam suggested that some governors are defecting to the APC in an attempt to avoid scrutiny and potential investigation into their activities. He warned that the APC should be cautious in accepting these new members, as it may be easier for them to cause problems from within the party.
The NNPP leader advised Nigerians to express their thoughts and grievances in a constructive manner. With President Tinubu seeking reelection, Aniebonam noted that it is his right to welcome new members who can support his campaign. However, Aniebonam urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to monitor state governments and investigate any governors who have mismanaged state funds.
The defections of governors and elected officials to the APC have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape. As the country prepares for upcoming elections, the dynamics of party affiliations and allegiances will likely continue to shift. The NNPP leader’s comments highlight the importance of understanding the complexities of Nigeria’s multi-party system and the need for transparency and accountability in governance.
