The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denied reports that a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party is urging him to run for the presidency in 2027. In a statement, Wike’s spokesman, Lere Olayinka, called the reports “another lie from idle minds” and affirmed that Wike’s position on the 2027 election is clear: he supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who will remain in office until 2031.
The statement was issued in response to an online claim that some PDP leaders had met to persuade Wike to contest the presidency. Olayinka clarified that the only meeting held on 20 August 2025 was a gathering of PDP stakeholders from southern Nigeria to discuss the party’s zoning arrangements. The outcome of that meeting was released in a press statement signed by several party leaders, including state chairmen and national officials.
Wike’s spokesman emphasized that the minister is committed to supporting President Tinubu and will continue working toward the success of his administration. As the FCT Minister, Wike remains focused on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to develop the federal capital’s infrastructure so it can compete with major cities worldwide.
The denial suggests that Wike is not interested in pursuing the presidency in 2027 and will instead continue backing the current administration. This development may affect Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 presidential election approaches, shifting attention to other potential candidates and the ongoing maneuvering within the PDP and other parties.
