Nigeria hunger poverty persist despite party defections

Atiku's exit will not make any dent on PDP -- Makinde — Daily Nigerian

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasized that Nigeria’s persistent issues of hunger and poverty remain unresolved, despite recent high-profile defections of politicians to the All Progressives Congress. In his bi-monthly newsletter, Governor Makinde noted that the focus on political defections has overshadowed the country’s pressing problems.

The governor’s comments come amid a wave of defections by governors and lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Makinde stated that he is more concerned about the defection of hunger and poverty, which continue to affect Nigerian families. He expressed concerns that political realignments are dominating the news, while families are forced to make difficult choices due to economic hardship.

Governor Makinde warned that the widening inequality in Nigeria is fueling frustration and despair, with the poor being disproportionately affected. He emphasized that hunger, rather than partisanship, is deepening hopelessness among citizens. The governor urged the People’s Democratic Party to rebuild public trust by presenting credible solutions to economic hardship.

Makinde noted that the outcome of the 2027 general election will be decided by Nigerians, not by political maneuvers. He stressed that the party’s forthcoming national convention in Ibadan will provide an opportunity for the People’s Democratic Party to reset and reassert its values. The governor emphasized that politics must serve humanity, and that the party should prioritize the needs of the people over political convenience.

The governor’s statements highlight the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria, including poverty, hunger, and inequality. As the country approaches the 2027 general election, the focus on political defections and realignments is likely to continue. However, Governor Makinde’s comments serve as a reminder that the underlying issues affecting Nigerian citizens must be addressed in order to bring about meaningful change.
