Nigerian Army Engages Communities On Security Challenges

Nigerian army holds security summit in Imo, engages communities

The Nigerian Army recently hosted a security summit in Owerri, Imo State, aimed at engaging local communities in combating security challenges. The event brought together various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, government officials, religious leaders, and youth representatives, to foster a collaborative relationship between the military and civilian society.

Major General Obinna Ajunwa, the special guest of honour, emphasized the importance of community leaders partnering with security agencies to prevent security breaches. He noted that the Nigerian Army has made significant efforts to ensure violence-free communities in the southeast region, particularly in Imo State, where the 34 Artillery Brigade Obinze has successfully curbed violent crimes in several local government areas.

The summit, themed “Taking The Nigerian Army To The Communities,” aligns with the policies of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, to promote harmonious relationships between the military and civilians. Brig. Gen. G.O. Anyalemechi, the guest speaker, highlighted the need for civilians to recognize the army as a symbol of national strength and honour, rather than an enemy. He stressed that a positive civilian-military relationship is essential for progressive governance and encouraged the public to provide reliable information to support the army’s efforts against insecurity.

Participants, including Prince Izunna Obiefule, President of the Orluzurume Youth Assembly, commended the military for initiating the programme. Obiefule attributed the insecurity situation in the state and southeast region to poor leadership, marginalization, and unpatriotism, emphasizing that good governance is crucial in addressing these issues. He suggested that employing democratic governance and forming local vigilante groups consisting of indigenes could help prevent insecurity.

The security summit in Owerri marks a significant step towards promoting collaboration between the Nigerian Army and local communities. By engaging with stakeholders and promoting a culture of cooperation, the military aims to effectively address security challenges and ensure peace and order in the region. As the army continues to work towards establishing trust and partnerships with civilians, the success of such initiatives will be crucial in shaping the future of security in Nigeria.
