The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully dismantled an illegal mineral storage network in Rivers State, as part of its efforts to protect the nation’s resources and ensure community safety. According to CSC Babawale Afolabi, the National Public Relations Officer, the operation was carried out by the Mining Marshals, South-South Zone, in collaboration with officials from the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.
The operation, led by DSC Emmanuel Abiahu, was based on credible intelligence and resulted in the discovery of warehouses stockpiling mined minerals without valid permits, licenses, or evidence of royalty payment to the Federal Government. The illegal activities not only undermine the economy but also pose environmental and safety risks to local residents. The NSCDC noted that the action was in response to the directive of the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to protect Nigeria’s solid mineral wealth and create a regulated space for legitimate miners and investors.
The Corps warned that all operators in the region must comply with the law, or face enforcement action, and emphasized its commitment to safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the environment through sustained surveillance and collaboration with stakeholders. The NSCDC also called on citizens to support security agencies with credible information to curb illegal mining and ensure that the benefits of Nigeria’s natural resources serve the people and the nation.
The dismantling of the illegal mineral storage network is a significant step in the NSCDC’s efforts to regulate the mining sector and prevent the loss of revenue to the government. The Corps’ actions are part of a broader strategy to protect Nigeria’s natural resources and promote sustainable development. As the NSCDC continues to crack down on illegal mining activities, it is likely that more operations will be carried out in the future to ensure compliance with the law and protect the interests of local communities.
