Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the former Governor of Osun State and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has emphasized the party’s position as a credible alternative in the Nigerian political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking during the unveiling of the ADC’s new state secretariat in Ilorin, Kwara State, Aregbesola criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its governance record, citing widespread hunger and a reduction in governance to personal enrichment and political intimidation.
Aregbesola attributed the economic hardships facing Nigerians to the failure of leadership under the APC, suggesting that this would lead to increased support for the ADC. He described the ADC as a party rooted in discipline, accountability, and service to the people. Former Kwara State Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed also addressed the event, stating that the emergence of the ADC marks the beginning of a new political movement in Kwara, aimed at creating a governance model that reflects the collective aspirations of the people.
Ahmed emphasized the need for the government to restore confidence among farmers, who are suffering due to insecurity, to enable them to safely return to their farms. Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary and former Minister of Youth and Sports, asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost relevance, positioning the ADC as the only viable opposition party in Kwara and across Nigeria. Abdullahi expressed concern over the rising insecurity in the state, particularly in rural areas, and highlighted the ADC’s commitment to promoting safety and good governance.
The ADC’s growth, as evidenced by its rapid expansion since its unveiling three months prior, indicates a significant shift in the political landscape. As the 2027 general elections approach, the ADC’s ability to convince voters of its credibility as an alternative to the APC will be crucial. The party’s focus on addressing the economic and security challenges facing Nigerians may resonate with voters seeking change. With its emphasis on discipline, accountability, and service, the ADC is poised to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
