APC Defends Defections, Says No Pressure on Governors

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns that its recent influx of defectors from opposition parties could undermine the country’s democratic landscape. According to Felix Morka, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the defections are a legitimate exercise of constitutional rights and do not signify a decline in democracy.

In an interview on Arise News, Morka emphasized that the decisions of members from the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress to join the APC are in line with democratic principles. He stated that people are simply exercising their democratic freedom to choose among competing party alternatives, and the APC is not coercing governors to join its ranks.

Morka challenged the notion that the defections pose a threat to democracy, describing such arguments as misleading and unfair. He argued that it would be disingenuous to suggest that the APC should act as a gatekeeper, deciding who can or cannot join the party. Instead, he emphasized that democracy is a system of freedoms, and it is not permissible to limit individuals’ rights to choose their own political affiliations.

The APC has seen a significant number of defectors from opposition parties in recent times, prompting concerns about the potential impact on the country’s democratic system. However, Morka’s comments suggest that the party views these defections as a natural consequence of democratic competition. By joining the APC, these individuals are exercising their constitutional rights and contributing to the country’s democratic process.

The development highlights the ongoing evolution of Nigeria’s political landscape, where politicians are increasingly willing to switch parties in pursuit of their goals. As the country navigates its complex democratic terrain, the APC’s stance on defections is likely to be closely watched by political observers and analysts. The party’s position on this issue may have significant implications for the country’s democratic future, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming months.
