‘Elections not won on social media’ — Kaduna Gov, Sani chides opposition

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has gained significant momentum in Kaduna State after four state assembly lawmakers and five federal lawmakers, along with thousands of their supporters, defected to the party. The mass defection took place during a mega rally on Saturday at Murtala Square in Kaduna.

The rally, attended by prominent APC figures such as National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and Minister of Environment Alhaji Balarabe Abbas Lawal, highlighted the party’s growing strength. Governor Uba Sani welcomed the new members, emphasizing that the APC is a unified family that does not discriminate and stressing the importance of grassroots engagement and representing the constituents who elected them.

The recent defections have boosted the APC’s representation in the state. The party now holds 13 seats from Kaduna State in the House of Representatives, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with only three. In the state assembly, the APC’s membership has risen to 26, while the PDP has eight members. Governor Sani noted that the APC had just four members in the House of Representatives in 2023, but now has 14, and expressed confidence that the party will secure roughly 95 % of the total votes in Kaduna State in the 2027 elections.

According to the governor, the influx of elected officials into the APC reflects his administration’s focus on justice, fairness and inclusivity. He highlighted the state’s diversity as a strength, pointing out the absence of ethno‑religious crises during his tenure and stressing that poverty transcends religious, ethnic and political lines. Professor Nentawe described the APC as the “promised land” for Nigerian politicians, praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for their achievements. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas added that the APC’s dominance in Kaduna State is unprecedented in the state’s history.

The defectors, including federal legislators Hon. Sadiq Ango, Hon. Andulkarim Husseini Ahmad, Hon. Aliyu Mustapha Abdullahi, and Hussaini Jalo, were welcomed by the APC leadership. Other notable defectors are ex‑Senator Danjuma Lah, former Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, and ex‑Senator Shehu Sani. This mass defection is expected to further solidify the APC’s position in Kaduna State, paving the way for continued dominance in the region.
