APC: North-Central demands position of National Chairman

A significant shift in Ekiti State’s political landscape occurred on Monday when former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Assembly candidate Hon. Niyi Adeogun and several party stalwarts defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The move further depletes the PDP’s base in the state.

The defectors cited the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the primary reason for their decision. According to Adeogun, these reforms have positively impacted the state, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance. He praised Governor Oyebanji’s open‑door leadership style, which he described as accommodating individuals from all walks of life, and highlighted the governor’s focus on rural development, particularly in Moba Council. Projects such as the reconstruction of the Erinmope–Irare Road have enhanced agricultural productivity and promoted food security.

Adeogun said he intends to use his experience to strengthen the APC’s grassroots presence and mobilize support for Governor Oyebanji’s re‑election bid. The defection includes the PDP Ward Chairman, the Youth Leader, and other executive members and politicians who previously formed the opposition’s backbone. Adeogun emphasized that his decision was not motivated by personal gain but by a desire to support the governor’s efforts, pointing to various development projects—especially road constructions and infrastructure upgrades—as evidence of the administration’s progress.

APC State Chairman Hon. Sola Elesin, represented by Ward Chairman Hon. Kolawole Olaoluwa, received the defectors and assured them of fair treatment under Governor Oyebanji’s leadership. Elesin urged the new members to remain loyal to the party and the governor, stressing the importance of working together to secure a victory in the 2026 election.

The defection is expected to bolster the APC’s position in Ekiti State and could influence the outcome of the upcoming election. As the state continues to experience significant development, the loyalty of its citizens and politicians will play a crucial role in shaping its future. With the 2026 election approaching, the APC’s efforts to maintain its stronghold will be closely watched both locally and nationally.
