The National Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Dan Iwuanyanwu, has claimed that certain influential politicians and businessmen from the South-East are quietly working against the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Iwuanyanwu alleged that these figures fear Kanu’s overwhelming popularity among ordinary people in the region.
“There are some top businessmen who are involved in businesses in Abuja, oil and all that,”
he said, adding that some political figures believe their careers would collapse if Kanu regained his freedom.
“If Nnamdi Kanu comes out today, there are people whose political career will come to an end permanently — without him even saying a word. Nnamdi Kanu has been loved by the people,”
he stated.
Iwuanyanwu’s remarks come amid renewed calls for the Federal Government to release Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 after being re-arrested abroad and extradited to Nigeria to face charges bordering on treason and terrorism.
