India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has explained the decision to omit ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav from the playing XI in the first ODI against Australia. The move was reportedly due to the Perth wicket and the need to achieve team balance, with the Indian team opting for three all-rounders and three specialist pacers.

Despite Kuldeep’s impressive recent form and outstanding ODI record, he was left out of the starting lineup. India’s bowlers struggled to make an impact, and the team ultimately fell to a convincing defeat, with Australia securing a seven-wicket victory in just 21.1 overs.

Kotak emphasized that the decision to exclude Kuldeep was based on the specific conditions of the Perth pitch and the team’s overall balance. “It depends on the wicket and the team balance,” he said. “The captain, head coach, and others decide purely based on the balance of the team rather than any individual.”

Kuldeep has enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, playing a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph and Asia Cup victory. He has also impressed in Test cricket, helping India whitewash the West Indies in their recent home series. With 181 wickets in 113 ODI outings at an average of 26.44, Kuldeep boasts a stellar record in the format.

India is now facing a must-win situation in the second ODI, scheduled to take place in Adelaide on October 23. The team will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing loss in the series opener and level the series. With Kuldeep’s impressive form and experience, it remains to be seen whether he will be recalled to the playing XI for the upcoming match.
