Cybercrime exhibit opens at Las Vegas Mob Museum featuring hackers

The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, also known as the Mob Museum, in Las Vegas has launched a new exhibit titled “Digital Underground” that sheds light on the evolution of cybercrime. The exhibit explores the history of cybercrime, from early hackers in the 1970s to modern-day ransomware organizations that steal millions of dollars daily. A key feature of the exhibit is a live cyberthreat map that displays real-time attacks, providing visitors with a visual representation of the scope and complexity of cybercrime.

According to Geoff Schumacher, the museum’s Vice President of Exhibits and Programs, cybercrime has become a significant threat globally, with corporations and government bodies facing approximately 1,900 cyberattacks weekly. The exhibit aims to provide historical context and insight into the operations of these criminal enterprises, highlighting the fact that organized crime is no longer limited to physical streets but thrives in the digital world.

The exhibit features various artifacts, including a floppy disk containing an early computer virus, a cereal toy whistle used to trick payphones into providing free long-distance calls, and a book by Joseph Popp, the creator of the first ransomware in 1989. These items illustrate the progression of cybercrime from simple scams to sophisticated ransomware attacks. In recent years, cyberattacks have had significant impacts, such as the 2023 attack on MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, which operate major casino resorts in Las Vegas.

The “Digital Underground” exhibit serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity and the need for individuals and organizations to be aware of the threats posed by cybercrime. By providing a comprehensive look at the history and current state of cybercrime, the exhibit aims to educate visitors on the dangers of cybercrime and the measures that can be taken to prevent and combat it. As cybercrime continues to evolve and pose significant threats to individuals and organizations worldwide, exhibits like “Digital Underground” play a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting cybersecurity.
