Rear Admiral Idi Abbas has been appointed the 25th Chief of Naval Staff of the Nigerian Navy, bringing more than three decades of experience and a strong background in Above Water Warfare to the role. Born on 20 September 1969 in the Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Abbas has shown unwavering dedication to duty and a passion for maritime security throughout his career.

His education began at Gwagwarwa Primary School in Kano, followed by the Air Force Military School in Jos from 1981 to 1986. In 1987, he entered the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 40 Regular Course and was commissioned as a Sub‑Lieutenant in 1993, earning a degree in Chemistry. Abbas has completed numerous military training programs, including the Sub‑Lieutenant Technical Course, the Officers’ Long Course in Above Water Warfare, and the Junior and Senior Staff Courses at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

Abbas’s career includes a variety of command and staff appointments. He has served aboard several Nigerian Navy vessels, such as NNS Aradu, NNS Damisa, and NNS Ayam. He also held positions as Naval Assistant to the Deputy Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Commanding Officer of Burma Battalion at the NDA, Base Administrative Officer of NNS Pathfinder, and Flag Officer Commanding the Central Naval Command. Rising steadily through the ranks—from Midshipman in 1996 to Rear Admiral in 2020—he has been honored with the Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, and Distinguished Service Star.

A Fellow of the Defence College and a member of both the Nigerian Institute of Management and the International Institute of Professional Security, Abbas is widely respected for his professionalism and strategic leadership. As the new Chief of Naval Staff, he is expected to inject renewed drive and operational focus into the Nigerian Navy, enhancing the protection of Nigeria’s maritime domain and national security. With his extensive experience and strong maritime security background, Abbas is well positioned to lead the Navy in safeguarding the country’s interests at sea.
