The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has downplayed the recent defection of some of its members, describing it as a temporary setback. According to the party’s outgoing chairman, Chris Hassan, the PDP will emerge stronger, more united, and determined.
Hassan made this statement during a valedictory briefing at the party’s State Secretariat in Jos, ahead of the party’s State Congress. He urged members to remain committed to promoting the party until it regains its rightful position. Hassan expressed his appreciation for the support of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, whose leadership he praised for setting a new standard in governance, infrastructure development, peace, and accountability.
The outgoing chairman reflected on his tenure, stating that he had no regrets about working to restore the PDP as the ruling party in the state after an eight-year hiatus under the All Progressives Congress (APC). He highlighted the party’s successes in the 2023 general elections, including winning the governorship seat, two senatorial seats, five House of Representatives seats, and 16 seats in the State House of Assembly.
However, Hassan expressed disappointment that despite these electoral successes, the court denied the national and state assembly members the opportunity to represent their constituents. He commended Governor Mutfwang’s leadership, describing it as a model for governance, peace building, and infrastructure development. Hassan assured that the party would continue to support the governor’s efforts to move Plateau State forward.
The PDP’s leadership also acknowledged the media’s role in supporting the party, thanking them for their consistent coverage and professional commitment. The party’s State Congress is expected to mark a new chapter in the PDP’s journey, as it seeks to build on its recent successes and overcome current challenges. With the party’s commitment to its ideals and the governor’s leadership, the PDP is poised to continue playing a significant role in Plateau State’s politics.
