Justice Peter Umeadi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has announced his resignation from the party and his withdrawal from partisan politics in Nigeria. In a letter addressed to Mr. Onyekwelu Jideobi, the APGA Ward 1 Chairman in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Umeadi expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to run as its presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
Umeadi’s affiliation with APGA began on 20 March 2019, when he joined the party at Nri Ward 1. He secured the party’s presidential ticket on 1 June 2022, becoming the first jurist and law academic to emerge as a presidential candidate for a major Nigerian political party. His campaign emphasized the rule of law, separation of powers, and due process, presenting a vision of social progress and equitable opportunities for all Nigerians. As a respected jurist, his candidacy offered a unique perspective and resonated with many citizens through his commitment to democracy and social justice.
The resignation marks the end of Umeadi’s political involvement and may have implications for Nigeria’s political landscape, especially as the country strives to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance. While his departure may surprise some, it underscores the challenges and opportunities within Nigeria’s complex political terrain. Umeadi’s legacy as a champion of the rule of law and social justice is likely to endure, even as the nation looks to the next generation of leaders to shape its political destiny.
