The Jigawa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced disagreement with the northern caucus’s endorsement of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the unopposed candidate for National Chairman. Hon. Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, the state chairman, said the decision runs counter to the interests of North‑West stakeholders.
The northern PDP caucus had previously resolved to zone the National Chairman position to the North‑West and to direct stakeholders in the zone to nominate a suitable candidate. However, before those stakeholders could meet to discuss the nomination, the caucus proceeded to nominate Turaki. Gumel noted that this move was made without notifying key leaders, including Dr. Sule Lamido, until an hour before the meeting. He also pointed out that the nominated candidates had not purchased forms to indicate their interest in the position.
According to Gumel, Dr. Sule Lamido was suggested by national party leaders as a potential candidate to revive the party. The Jigawa State PDP is now waiting to see whether its resolution will be considered. With 26 years of experience in the party, the Jigawa chapter is keen to avoid any actions that could destabilize the PDP and is determined to ensure that the party is led by someone capable of addressing its current challenges.
Gumel reiterated that the chapter will take all necessary steps to guarantee that the right person assumes PDP leadership, prioritizing the unity and progress of both the party and the country. This development highlights the ongoing dynamics within the PDP as it navigates its leadership structure. The party’s ability to manage internal processes and make decisions that reflect stakeholders’ interests will be crucial in the coming days, and the Jigawa State chapter’s stance serves as a reminder of the need for inclusive decision‑making within the party.
