Vandalism disrupts Nigeria power supply to Maiduguri Damaturu

Thunderstorm damages Otukpo-Nsukka transmission line — TCN — Daily Nigerian

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a significant disruption to its power transmission services following the vandalism of one of its key infrastructure components. On Friday, at approximately 5:46 pm, the company’s Tower T347, located along the Gombe–Damaturu 330 Kilo Volt transmission line, was sabotaged, resulting in a partial disruption of bulk power supply to several areas.

According to Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, a routine inspection by the company’s team revealed that the tower’s legs had been deliberately cut off, causing it to buckle to one side. This act of vandalism has affected the power supply to Maiduguri in Borno State and Damaturu in Yobe State, as well as their surrounding areas.

Despite this challenge, the TCN has managed to maintain a steady power supply to the affected regions through the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), which feeds into the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC). The power is then distributed to consumers through major 33kV feeders, including those serving Beneshiek, Damasak, Bama, University Campus, Maiduguri Town, Monguno, and other areas. Additionally, Damaturu and its environs are being supplied with power from the Potiskum Substation on a temporary basis.

TCN engineers are currently on site, working to replace the damaged tower and restore normal transmission as soon as possible. The company has strongly condemned the act of vandalism, emphasizing the importance of protecting national assets and reporting any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities or the nearest TCN office.

The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation from the public in safeguarding critical infrastructure. The TCN’s efforts to maintain a stable power supply despite the challenges posed by vandalism demonstrate the company’s commitment to providing reliable electricity services to its customers. As the company works to restore full transmission capacity, it is essential for stakeholders to prioritize the protection of national assets and support the TCN’s efforts to ensure a stable and efficient power supply.
