INEC: Nigerians expect nothing short of prioritizing national interest - SDP to Amupitan

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan to remain resolute in the face of intimidation from politicians. Speaking to journalists in Osogbo on Sunday, the former APC Presidential Campaign Council member emphasized that, as the country approaches off‑cycle and general elections, the INEC chairman must demonstrate courage and integrity.

Oyintiloye advised Amupitan to resist undue pressure, especially from opposition politicians who may seek to discredit the electoral process. He stressed that the commission must adhere strictly to established rules and regulations to ensure free and fair elections. According to Oyintiloye, the commission’s integrity is under scrutiny, and the chairman must ignore negative criticism and apply the rules without favoritism. He warned that those who have lost elections might try to undermine the commission’s efforts for personal gain, but the INEC chairman must stay steadfast.

The APC chieftain praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing Amupitan, describing the choice as a testament to the latter’s integrity and honor. Oyintiloye expressed confidence in Amupitan’s ability to sanitize the country’s electoral process. He noted that the upcoming Anambra governorship election in November, as well as the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun, will serve as a litmus test for Amupitan’s leadership.

As the electoral commission prepares for these crucial elections, Oyintiloye’s advice highlights the importance of independence and transparency in the electoral process. The INEC chairman’s capacity to withstand pressure and ensure credible elections will be closely watched by Nigerians and the international community, with the nation’s democratic development hanging in the balance.
