Thunderstorm damages Otukpo-Nsukka transmission line — TCN — Daily Nigerian

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported a major disruption to its power transmission services after one of its key infrastructure components was vandalized. On Friday at about 5:46 p.m., Tower T347 on the Gombe–Damaturu 330 kV transmission line was sabotaged, causing a partial interruption of bulk power supply to several areas. During a routine inspection, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, discovered that the tower’s legs had been deliberately cut, causing it to buckle to one side.

The vandalism affected power supply to Maiduguri in Borno State, Damaturu in Yobe State, and surrounding communities. Despite the setback, TCN has kept a steady supply to the affected regions through the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP), which feeds the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC). Power is then distributed to consumers via major 33 kV feeders serving Beneshiek, Damasak, Bama, the university campus, Maiduguri town, Monguno, and other areas. Additionally, Damaturu and its environs are receiving electricity temporarily from the Potiskum Substation.

TCN engineers are on site working to replace the damaged tower and restore normal transmission as quickly as possible. The company strongly condemned the act of vandalism, emphasizing the need to protect national assets and urging the public to report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities or the nearest TCN office. This incident underscores the importance of increased vigilance and public cooperation in safeguarding critical infrastructure.

TCN’s efforts to maintain a stable power supply despite the challenges demonstrate its commitment to providing reliable electricity services. As the company works to restore full transmission capacity, stakeholders must prioritize the protection of national assets and support TCN’s initiatives to ensure a stable and efficient power supply.
