Breast Cancer Screening Centres Planned in Jigawa State

The Jigawa State Government has announced plans to establish breast cancer screening centers across the state, aiming to enhance early detection and treatment of the disease. This initiative was revealed by Hajiya Amina Umar Namadi, the wife of the state governor, during an event marking the 2025 World Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Dutse.

The event, which included a health awareness walk, was organized by the Hamdan Kasirab Civic Women Assistance Foundation in collaboration with the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, Jigawa Chapter. Hajiya Amina emphasized the importance of regular screening for women, stating that early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in reducing breast cancer-related deaths. The campaign, themed ‘Every Story Matters, Every Story is Unique’, sought to sensitize women on the significance of proactive health measures.

Medical experts delivered a public lecture, highlighting preventive measures and the roles of families and communities in combating breast cancer. They identified heredity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, and poor diet as major risk factors for the disease. Dr. Halima Hashim, a medical expert, stressed the importance of early detection through routine screening as a key strategy for effective management and survival.

Hajiya Amina urged women to visit nearby health facilities for regular check-ups and to seek immediate attention if they notice any unusual changes in their breasts. She noted that the current administration has upgraded over 180 primary healthcare facilities, as well as several secondary and tertiary health institutions, to improve access to quality healthcare across the state.

The Jigawa State Government has pledged to continue collaborating with the federal government, development partners, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about breast cancer and ensure that every woman in the state can access affordable medical care. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the global burden of breast cancer, which claims thousands of lives every year. By establishing screening centers and promoting early detection, the government aims to reduce the incidence of breast cancer and improve health outcomes for women in Jigawa State.
