Five teenagers die in Gombe boat mishap

A tragic boat accident in Nafada town, Gombe State, has claimed the lives of at least five teenage girls: Najib Ibrahim, 18; Hauwa’u Dogal, 15; Ummati Baraya, 16; Umaira Gidado, 16; and Amina Jaliya, 15.

Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as painful and heart‑breaking. In a condolence message conveyed through his media aide, Mr. Ismaila Uba‑Misilli, the governor sympathized with the bereaved families and the wider Nafada community, noting that the loss has cut short the lives of promising young people. He emphasized that the tragedy affects not only the families but the entire state, praying that the deceased may rest in peace and that their families find the strength to bear the loss.

Governor Yahaya also called for strict adherence to water‑transport safety standards to prevent future mishaps. He urged local councils, community leaders, boat operators, and regulators to enforce safety protocols across riverine areas. Additionally, he ordered the State Emergency Management Agency and the Nafada Local Government Council to provide support to the affected families.

The incident underscores the importance of water‑safety measures, especially in riverine communities. As the state mourns these young lives, the focus on safety protocols and emergency response is crucial to preventing similar tragedies. The government’s response highlights its commitment to the safety and well‑being of citizens, particularly in areas prone to water‑related accidents.
