The Igbo Political Network (IPN) has mobilized more than 5,000 independent observers to monitor the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. According to the group’s president, Alex Okemiri, the deployment aims to ensure a free and fair exercise, given the election’s significance for the South‑East region. The contest is viewed as a crucial test of the region’s political history, attracting keen interest from leaders of neighboring states.
Okemiri emphasized that all stakeholders must cooperate to guarantee a level playing field, free from intimidation and marginalisation. Since 2015, the IPN has advocated for the protection of Igbo interests and the promotion of peaceful, fair political activities. To achieve this, the network has deployed independent observers to verify that the outcome reflects the will of the people.
Despite economic challenges, the IPN has committed resources to mobilize these observers, underscoring the election’s importance to the Igbo community. The group has also called on the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, to ensure that every vote is counted. Okemiri urged the INEC boss to remain unbiased and transparent, noting the high stakes and international attention focused on the poll. He reminded Prof. Amupitan that this election serves as an integrity test ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Furthermore, the IPN appealed to security agencies to act professionally and ethically during the polls, emphasizing the need to prevent vote‑buying and intimidation. With global eyes on Anambra State, the network stressed that a free and fair election is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the region. The deployment of independent observers and the IPN’s advocacy efforts highlight the election’s significance in the South‑East, and the group’s commitment to transparency and accountability will be closely watched both locally and internationally.
