The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged political parties in Osun State to conduct peaceful and transparent primaries ahead of the 2026 governorship election. INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s state office in Osogbo. The meeting aimed to ensure that all parties understand and adhere to the election timetable.
According to the timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between November 24 and December 15, 2025, in line with Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022. Dr. Agboke emphasized the importance of internal democracy and minimizing friction during the primaries to prevent pre-election disputes. He also reminded parties to strictly adhere to INEC’s regulations and the election timetable.
The INEC boss noted that campaign activities have not commenced and should begin 150 days before polling day, as stated in Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act. He advised parties to consult INEC’s website for guidelines on political rallies, processions, and campaigns. Dr. Agboke expressed concern about the lack of awareness among some party members, urging parties to intensify voter education and discourage violence and vote buying.
As of October 24, 2025, a total of 151,593 registrants had completed their continuous voter registration in Osun State. Dr. Agboke commended residents for their cooperation and encouraged others to participate. He also praised INEC staff in the state for their professionalism and dedication during the ongoing registration exercise.
The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Police Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, assured that electorates will not be intimidated and electoral staff will be safe during the poll. He warned against electoral vices and called on electorates to report any violence to the police control room. The Osun Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council, Pastor Victor Akande, called for peace and adherence to the rule of law, noting that some political parties have started campaigning against electoral rules and guidelines.
The appeal for peaceful and transparent primaries is significant, as it sets the tone for a credible election. With the election timetable in place, all stakeholders must adhere to the rules to ensure a successful poll. The Osun State governorship election is expected to be closely watched, and the conduct of political parties during the primaries will be crucial in determining the outcome.
