The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged political parties in Osun State to conduct peaceful and transparent primaries ahead of the 2026 governorship election. INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Mutiu Agboke made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s state office in Osogbo, which was convened to ensure that all parties understand and adhere to the election timetable. According to the timetable, parties are expected to hold their primaries between 24 November and 15 December 2025, in line with Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022.
Dr. Agboke emphasized the importance of internal democracy and minimizing friction during the primaries to prevent pre‑election disputes. He reminded parties to strictly follow INEC’s regulations and the election timetable, noting that campaign activities have not yet commenced and should begin only 150 days before polling day, as stipulated in Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act. He advised parties to consult INEC’s website for guidelines on political rallies, processions, and campaigns.
Expressing concern about the lack of awareness among some party members, Dr. Agboke urged intensified voter education and a firm stance against violence and vote‑buying. As of 24 October 2025, a total of 151 593 registrants had completed continuous voter registration in Osun State. He commended residents for their cooperation, encouraged others to participate, and praised INEC staff in the state for their professionalism and dedication during the ongoing registration exercise.
The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Police Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, assured that electors will not be intimidated and that electoral staff will be safe during the poll. He warned against electoral vices and called on the public to report any violence to the police control room. Meanwhile, Pastor Victor Akande, Osun Chairman of the Inter‑Party Advisory Council, appealed for peace and adherence to the rule of law, noting that some parties have begun campaigning in breach of electoral rules and guidelines.
The appeal for peaceful and transparent primaries is significant because it sets the tone for a credible election. With the election timetable in place, all stakeholders must follow the rules to ensure a successful poll. The Osun State governorship election is expected to be closely watched, and the conduct of political parties during the primaries will be crucial in determining the outcome.
