Maharazu Salisu Faru, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Maradun II Constituency, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced the switch at the APC state secretariat in Gusau, bringing more than 1,000 supporters with him. Faru cited dissatisfaction with the PDP’s leadership and alleged injustice within the party, adding that his constituents have not benefited from the current PDP‑led administration in terms of appointments or development projects. He believes the APC offers a better platform for progress and inclusion.
The defection follows consultations with stakeholders and ward leaders across his constituency, who endorsed his decision. A formal letter notifying the House of Assembly of his party change has been submitted to the Clerk of the House. APC State Chairman Alhaji Danfulani Maikatako welcomed Faru and his supporters, assuring them of equal treatment within the party and inviting other PDP members to join the APC to help rebuild the state.
This development is part of ongoing political realignments in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections. The defection of a sitting lawmaker and his supporters is significant, reflecting a shifting political landscape. As the APC and PDP remain the major contenders in the state, such moves can affect the balance of power and influence future electoral outcomes. The trend of party switching underscores politicians’ desire to align with parties they perceive as better able to advance their interests and those of their constituents. With Faru’s defection, the APC has gained a notable foothold in Maradun II Constituency, which could impact its performance in upcoming elections.
