The Edo State Government has issued a one‑week ultimatum to former Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo, demanding the immediate return of all government property and assets still in his possession. In a statement released by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government noted that several official items—including vehicles, documents and other state‑owned assets assigned to Mr Omobayo during his tenure—have not been surrendered despite formal reminders.

The state emphasizes that all assets acquired or used in the course of public service remain the property of the state and must be returned upon cessation of office. Retaining such property constitutes a breach of public trust and unlawful possession of state assets. Consequently, Mr Omobayo has been given seven days from the date of the release to return all government property in his custody to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

If he fails to comply within the stipulated period, the government will direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to arrest him and ensure the immediate recovery of the assets through lawful means. The administration underscores its commitment to accountability, due process and the protection of public property, asserting that no individual—regardless of former position or political affiliation—may unlawfully appropriate or retain assets belonging to the people of Edo State.

Under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s leadership, the government will continue to uphold transparency, discipline and integrity in public service, holding all public officers to the highest standards of responsibility and probity. Officials have urged Mr Omobayo to respect the directive and avoid actions that could invite further consequences or embarrassment. This effort forms part of the state’s broader push for good governance and accountability, aiming to ensure that public resources are utilized for the benefit of the people of Edo State. As the deadline approaches, the government is expected to take additional steps to recover the outstanding assets and property.
