APC gains as lawmaker defects from PDP

Zamfara Assembly member, PDP officials defect to  APC — Daily Nigerian

A lawmaker from Zamfara State, Mr. Salisu, has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made at the APC state party office in Gusau on Tuesday, where Mr. Salisu was accompanied by over 1,000 members and all PDP ward executives from his constituency.

According to Mr. Salisu, the decision to leave the PDP was due to the party’s lack of fairness and justice, particularly in the distribution of appointments and positions. Despite the support given to the PDP-led government in the state during the 2023 general elections, Mr. Salisu’s constituency was allegedly neglected, with no appointments or positions allocated to it.

The lawmaker expressed his disappointment, stating that he was the only one left to handle the demands of PDP supporters in the area, with no benefits or dividends of democracy accruing to his people from the PDP-led government. This led to his decision to defect to the APC, along with the PDP officials and over 1,000 constituents.

Notable figures among the defectors include party officials such as the chairmen of the five wards in Mr. Salisu’s constituency. A senior PDP chieftain, Alhaji Salis Dodo, also joined the APC during the event, which was attended by APC leaders from across the state.

The APC State Chairman, Alhaji Tukur Danfulani, welcomed the defectors, assuring them of full recognition and equal treatment within the party. He promised to ensure that the defectors were integrated into the party at all levels, regardless of the time they joined. Danfulani also predicted that more members of the PDP and other political parties would join the APC in the state before the end of the year.

The former APC State Chairman, Alhaji Lawali Liman, commended the party leaders for their leadership and urged the defectors to remain loyal to the party. He also applauded Senator Abdulaziz Yari and Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, for their support to the party in the state.

The defection of Mr. Salisu and his constituents is seen as a significant development in the political landscape of Zamfara State, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the state’s political dynamics in the future.
