A lawmaker from Zamfara State, Mr. Salisu, has defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced the move at the APC state party office in Gusau on Tuesday, accompanied by more than 1,000 members and all PDP ward executives from his constituency.
Mr. Salisu said he left the PDP because of its lack of fairness and justice, especially in the distribution of appointments and positions. Although the PDP‑led government received support in the state during the 2023 general elections, his constituency was allegedly ignored, receiving no appointments or positions. He expressed disappointment, noting that he was the only one left to address the demands of PDP supporters in the area, with his people receiving no benefits or dividends of democracy from the PDP‑led administration. This frustration prompted his defection to the APC, along with the PDP officials and over 1,000 constituents. Among the defectors were the chairmen of the five wards in Mr. Salisu’s constituency, and senior PDP chieftain Alhaji Salis Dodo also joined the APC during the event, which was attended by APC leaders from across the state.
APC State Chairman Alhaji Tukur Danfulani welcomed the newcomers, assuring them of full recognition and equal treatment within the party. He pledged to integrate the defectors at all levels, regardless of when they joined, and predicted that more PDP members and politicians from other parties would switch to the APC in Zamfara before the year’s end. Former APC State Chairman Alhaji Lawali Liman praised the party leaders for their leadership, urged the defectors to remain loyal, and commended Senator Abdulaziz Yari and Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Matawalle for their support to the party in the state.
The defection of Mr. Salisu and his constituents is viewed as a significant development in Zamfara’s political landscape, and its impact on the state’s future dynamics remains to be seen.
