Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for giving Nigerians abroad a misleading impression of the country’s economic situation. Shehu argues that Akpabio’s statements do not accurately reflect the true state of affairs in Nigeria.
Taking to the social media platform X, Shehu urged Nigerians living overseas to disregard the Senate President’s remarks. He cited the nation’s rising debt, now at N170 trillion, as a major cause for concern. He also highlighted the severity of hunger, noting that approximately 139 million Nigerians are currently facing severe food insecurity. In addition, Shehu pointed out a significant unemployment crisis, with around 60 million youths without jobs, and warned that over 30 million children nationwide are suffering from severe malnutrition. According to Shehu, these statistics contradict Akpabio’s portrayal of the country’s situation.
Shehu reinforced his criticism by referencing biblical teachings, quoting verses that caution against leaders who spread falsehoods and engage in deceitful behavior. He cited Ephesians 5:6, which warns against being deceived by empty words, and Jeremiah 9:6, which speaks to the dangers of living in a state of deception.
The criticism comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with economic challenges, including a rising debt burden and widespread poverty. The country’s economic situation remains a concern for many Nigerians, both at home and abroad, and the ongoing debate raises questions about how the government will address the issues raised by Shehu and other critics.
