Hon. Festus Ayodele Adefiranye, a member of the House of Representatives for the Oke‑Igbo/Ile Oluji/Odigbo Federal Constituency of Ondo State, clarified the National Assembly’s oversight role while receiving the “Most Outstanding Honourable in Constituency Project Delivery of the Year” award at the National Assembly Complex. He emphasized that the legislature’s oversight function is about ensuring accountability, not accusing or intimidating individuals or institutions.

According to Adefiranye, oversight involves monitoring the judicious use of appropriated funds to guarantee they are spent for their intended purposes. He reiterated that the primary responsibility of the National Assembly is lawmaking, which inherently includes oversight of all matters for which laws are enacted. It is logical, he said, for lawmakers to check that proposals brought before the Assembly are implemented as intended.

Adefiranye also praised the current relationship between the executive and the legislature, commending the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate for managing legislative affairs in a way that sustains peace and cooperation among members. He argued that confronting the executive does not demonstrate bravery; rather, it hampers development and delays governmental processes.

Addressing criticism that the 10th National Assembly is merely a “rubber stamp” for the executive, Adefiranye attributed this perception to a lack of understanding of governmental operations. He lauded the Assembly’s leadership for navigating public pressure and fostering a constructive relationship with the executive.

In his legislative work, Adefiranye has sponsored four bills, including two that seek to establish a federal medical centre and an entrepreneurship university in his constituency. He highlighted the reconstruction of the Ore‑Ondo‑Akure road—resulting from his motion—as a project that reduces accidents and deaths. The lawmaker pledged to continue leveraging his mandate to collaborate with the federal government for further development in his constituency. His award‑winning projects reflect a commitment to delivering beneficial initiatives to his community and underscore the importance of interdependence among the three arms of government.
