Senator Sunday Katung of the Kaduna South Senatorial District has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement titled “A New Chapter: A Message of Unity and Purpose,” Katung explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents, political stakeholders, family members and associates. He said the move is intended to ensure more effective representation and participation in decision‑making processes that affect his constituency, emphasizing a genuine desire to serve his people more efficiently and to have their voices heard at the highest levels.
Katung noted that appeals from his constituents, as well as engagements with President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani—who have expressed interest in partnering with local leaders to promote development—also influenced his choice. The defection was made alongside his colleague Representative Daniel Amos and several members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly. He highlighted that the APC’s developmental projects in the senatorial district demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, equity and progress, and that joining the party will consolidate existing gains and attract further government attention to the area.
The senator appealed to friends, supporters and political associates who may disagree with his decision to respect it, stressing that political differences should not affect personal relationships. He reaffirmed his commitment to unity and service, promising to continue engaging with all stakeholders to promote peace and development in Kaduna South.
Katung’s defection is significant, as it may reshape the political landscape of Kaduna State and the country. By joining the ruling party, he could influence the distribution of resources and attention to his constituency, and his move may have far‑reaching implications for both his constituents and Nigeria’s broader political dynamics.
