A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Samuel Anyanwu has suspended the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and five other members of the National Working Committee (NWC). Anyanwu announced the suspensions during a press briefing in Abuja, citing incompetence, financial misconduct, and disregard for court judgments as the reasons.
The suspended members include National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, accused of issuing statements without party approval; Deputy National Vice Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja; National Financial Secretary Daniel Woyenguikoro, alleged to have engaged in financial misconduct; National Youth Leader Sulaiman Kadade; and Deputy National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo. The latter two were suspended for 30 days. All six will appear before the Disciplinary Committee to show cause why they should not be expelled.
In response to the suspensions, the faction appointed National Vice Chairman (North‑Central) Mohammed Abdulrahman as Acting National Chairman. This move follows an earlier decision by the NWC under Damagum’s leadership to suspend Samuel Anyanwu, National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, and two other members.
The reciprocal suspensions highlight a deepening power struggle within the PDP. Anyanwu’s faction accuses Damagum of incompetence and financial misconduct, while Damagum’s side alleges disobedience on Anyanwu’s part. These internal conflicts could have significant implications for the party’s ability to present a unified front in upcoming elections.
As one of Nigeria’s major political parties, the PDP’s internal dynamics are closely monitored by analysts and stakeholders. The party is attempting to reposition itself ahead of the next general elections, but the ongoing infighting may hinder its progress. How the PDP resolves these disputes will shape its future trajectory.
