Maldives bans tobacco sales to anyone born after 2007

Asian nation introduces lifetime smoking ban for Gen Z and beyond — RT World News

The Maldives has become the second country in the world to introduce a generational ban on tobacco, following New Zealand’s lead. The new law, which came into effect on Saturday, prohibits anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from buying or using tobacco products. This move aims to reduce tobacco consumption and exposure to secondhand smoke, which are among the leading causes of illness and death in the country.

According to the Maldives Health Statistics, tobacco use is a significant public health concern. In response, President Mohamed Muizzu launched an anti-smoking campaign last year, which included banning vapes and e-cigarettes, as well as increasing import duties and taxes on cigarettes. The latest ban is an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, ratified in May, and applies to all forms of tobacco, including visitors to the island nation.

The law requires retailers to verify buyers’ ages, and individuals under 21 are barred from participating in tobacco-related sales or commercial activities. Additionally, the law bans all forms of tobacco advertising, sponsorship, and promotion, and upholds a total prohibition on electronic cigarettes and vapes for all ages.

The Maldives Health Ministry believes the new law will help protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation. First Lady Saajidhaa Mohamed has hailed the move as a historic and bold step to break the cycle of addiction and prevent diseases. The law is part of a global trend to curb tobacco use, with many countries introducing measures such as public smoking bans, increased taxes, and age restrictions.

Other countries, including the UK, are considering similar age-based laws to ban tobacco sales to young people. However, New Zealand repealed its ban in November 2023, citing concerns about creating a black market. The Maldives’ move is seen as a significant step towards reducing tobacco use and promoting public health, and its impact will be closely watched by other countries considering similar measures. With this new law, the Maldives aims to secure a healthier and stronger future for its youth.
